Fort Walton Beach to Freeport, FL—the calm before the next storm

Yesterday we got ready quickly, left Adventure Marina and crossed Choctawatchee Bay, a wide-open, 27 mile-long estuary. The wind was on the nose, making it fairly choppy for the first half, then got calmer as the day progressed.

We traveled 30 miles, then needed a place to hide out for a couple of nights, as Winter Storm Gerri passed through, and Freeport Marina had room for us. This is another bare-bones operation with a welcoming attitude, friendly locals and a lot of character. They were hit pretty hard by Tuesday’s storm, with the loss of two boats and two docks.

Once again, another Looper helped us out without being asked. Dan from Traveler came over to greet us and offered up the keys to his truck, which we gratefully accepted and went to the local Publix, which has become our go-to grocery store whenever we’re near one.

We were treated to a beautiful evening and enjoyed a good meal at the marina restaurant, The Oar House & Oyster Bar.

This morning we also got moving quickly, but not to get underway. We took a long walk on a lovely multi-use path near the marina, before the wind and rain from today’s gale arrived. We’re stuck inside for the rest of the day hanging out, reading, enjoying a book on tape, and playing games, as we listen (again) to the howling wind, rain and waves assault our little boat.
