The wind howled and rain fell most of last night, in what turned out be the beginning of Winter Storm Ember, now headed up the eastern seaboard. We got tossed around a bit in the 30-mph wind gusts, but stayed warm and dry in our sturdy little boat in our well-protected marina slip.
This morning we chatted with two other Looper crews on the dock, including a family with two boys and a dog aboard, then left Gulf Shores around mid-day. We motored east through the Intracoastal Waterway, past Orange Beach, AL, where this industrial dock was right next to The Wharf, a luxury complex with mega-yachts, shops and a Ferris wheel.
We only traveled 10 miles, to Ingram Bayou, our last planned stop in Alabama and a lovely anchorage where we spent time years ago on a sailboat charter. We anchored in 7 feet of water, near this sunken sailboat, which was not there on our last trip.
There was one other boat in the bay when we arrived, containing an elderly gentleman sunbathing nude. He immediately motored over to say Hi, and we were relieved to see that he had put on his swim trunks prior to visiting. “Steve” turned out to be a delightful man and a former MacGregor 26X owner, and we chatted for quite a while before he went back to his sunbathing, until it got too chilly and he went home. The high today was a sunny 60F, and we fired up our grill for the first time in a month and had cheeseburgers, risotto and salad, then played a new board game that we received for Christmas, Rivals for Catan.
