Another day, another iffy forecast, with rain in the morning and gusty winds in the afternoon, although it ended up being better than the day before. We woke up to steady rain, which lasted until 10:30 AM, and waited until 11:15 AM to depart just to be absolutely sure that it was finished. There were no surprises, and we went through three locks (10, 9 and 8) and covered 17 miles on the stunning Mohawk River, arriving in Schenectady, NY around 3:00 PM. We’re tied up at the Mohawk Valley Marina, the snuggest harbor we could find, to escape the strong west winds that have followed us for the last three days. The marina is almost brand new, and part of an apartment and retail complex next to a casino. There’s a lot going on here, but it’s actually very quiet. We had dinner at Druthers Brewing, where their motto is “You are your choices,” then took a long evening walk on the Empire State Trail that passes right through town. Map Link: Schenectady, NY
Settled by Dutch colonists in the 1700s, the name Schenectady is derived from a Mohawk word meaning “beyond the pines.” The city was another industrial powerhouse in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and was home to the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) and Edison Electric Company, which became General Electric.
Our journey on the Erie Canal is almost complete, and we plan to arrive tomorrow in Waterford, NY, where the canal meets the Hudson River.
