Plattsburgh to Rouses Pount, NY. Last full day in the USA for awhile.

Today’s sunrise caught my eye, framed by the crane of a research vessel docked here. On the right, you can also see fishing boats assembling for day two of their weekend tournament.

We left Plattsburgh at 8:45 AM, with a 5 mph tailwind and following seas of less than a foot, traveling 25 miles to Rouses Point, NY, population 2,200. Named for Jacques Rouse, a French-Canadian soldier who fought with the Americans during the Revolutionary War, the village is 1.5 miles from the Canada border. During Prohibition, it was a popular location for bootleggers and today is a mecca for pleasure craft on Lake Champlain. Map Link: Rouses Point, NY

Dragonfly is docked at Gaines Safe Harbor Marina, which has far more Canadian-flagged vessels than U.S., with French the predominant language spoken among the boaters. Today was a laundry day, with some minor boat projects and a little exploring, but there isn’t much to see or do here, and the weather has been humid, with dew points of 70F for several days, which has sapped our energy. Tomorrow we plan to clear into Canada and head north on the Richelieu River for about 80 miles to the Saint Lawrence Seaway.

Dinner tonight was pizza and salad at Sandy’s Deli, which has the kind of snarky signs that we love, then we played cribbage and relaxed some more, bookending the day with a lovely sunset at this quiet and peaceful last stop in the USA.
